 Tennessee Gambling: Casinos, Poker, Pari-mutuel

Tennessee Casinos & Gambling

Tennessee Gambling - Tennessee Gambling Forum - Tennessee Casinos

Tennessee used to be one of the only three remaining states in America without any form of legalized gambling. The residents of this state?s opposition to any form of gambling were founded mainly on their traditional religious beliefs. However, the locals now recognize that for things to move forward, the need to take a step in a different direction was necessary. In January of 2004, the state of Tennessee finally implemented their very first State Lottery with the game Powerball. This is the first form of commercial gambling in Tennessee.

Under the Tennessee state constitution, lottery transactions have to involve three elements: consideration, prize and one chance. The State Lottery in Tennessee is used mainly for educational funding and college scholarships. To date, revenues from Tennessee State Lottery have reached over $350,694,000 since the launch in 2004.

With the approval of their first form of commercial gambling (in other words, the Lottery), the state of Tennessee has also allowed for some limited charitable gaming activities like bingos and raffles. Conversely, Pari-mutuel betting is actually authorized by the state, but as of yet there have been no tracks built.

To this day, the state of Tennessee still does not allow the operation of casinos. In spite of this, Tennessee residents have come to the realization that gambling may not be such a bad endeavor after all, and some other form of commercial gambling may have a chance to succeed legislatively in the coming years. A poll taken recently indicated that residents of the state actually preferred casino gambling over the lottery; because of this, a proposal for a tribal casino in this state is now being reviewed by legislators.

Poker has now become a mainstream game all over United States, thanks to the success and high ratings of Poker games shown on TV. While the state of Tennessee has no laws legalizing the game of poker, it is a fact that because of its popularity, hundreds of poker games are still being played throughout Tennessee.

Residents are able to access various poker games online because there are no specific laws disallowing internet poker games here. In fact, the winner in the 2003 World Series Poker event was a resident of Spring Hill, Tennessee. With an investment of $40, Chris Moneymaker, 27 years of age, logged on to an online poker tournament and won $2.5M.

As there is no other gambling activities in the state of Tennessee, locals and visitors alike, travel to neighboring states to play. Mississippi operates a casino in Tunica County, which is very near Memphis. Arkansas and Alabama feature horse and dog racing. North Carolina has a tribe casino operated by Cherokee Indians.
