In 1996, Ohio voters shot down a resolution to legalize riverboat casinos in this state. But nearly ten years later, it would seem that things are changing. A decade after neighboring states like Indiana approved riverboat casinos in their territory (including three on the Ohio River); the effects are now clearly seen and felt. Indiana is reaping the benefits in millions of dollars in revenue and job opportunities and Ohio would like to follow suit.
Currently, casino gambling is illegal in the state of Ohio. The proposal to build and develop casinos here was turned down twice by voters since 1990. But state representatives have observed that while gambling in other areas continues to expand, voters may very well take a good look and reconsider. Gambling dollars have continuously helped other communities and their economic situations. Also, because many people leave Ohio to play in other states, much of the money for gaming, tax revenue and job opportunities is going to other states.
Members of an Indian tribe here have expressed their goal to open several casinos in 133 acres of land in southwest Ohio.
There is also a proposal to bring slot machines in Ohio?s race tracks. There are currently seven race tracks all over Ohio. Each of these race tracks feature harness racing and off betting parlors. Horse Racing and pari-mutuel wagering on horse races are allowed in accordance with Ohio Revised Code Chapter 3769.
Ohio Poker Scene
Poker, while generally illegal in this state, is a game often played in Ohio homes. Charitable institutions also sponsor Poker events for the purpose of fund-raising. Charitable gaming activities are allowed in Ohio Constitution. Many residents buy the idea of charity tournaments.
In particular, in the district of Columbus, Ohio, a successful State Poker Tournament was held recently, courtesy of students from Ohio State University. Em tournaments in the future.
In Ohio, there is even Ohio Gaming College on Macedonia, were students can learn craps, roulette and other casino games. This college trains students for professional jobs relating to casino.
Ohio Bingo and Lottery
Ohio has about 2,000 bingo organizations, many of which are formed by church groups.
Ohio state lottery recently proposed a change in their current game structure by introducing a series of number games called Super Lotto. Plans to bring multistate lottery, offering bigger jackpots, such as the Poweball, are also being proposed by state legislators.
Lottery sales total billions in revenue, according to the Ohio Lottery Commission.
