North Carolina Gambling and Indian Casino

North Carolina Gambling Forum :: North Carolina Casinos :: Casinos in North Carolina

Casinos and Gambling activity in North Carolina is strictly regulated by state laws, and there are no commercially operated casinos in North Carolina, only a Native American Casino based in the Indian federal reservation of Cherokee, in western North Carolina.

Video poker machines

Video poker is very popular in North Carolina, and can be found throughout the state in convenience stores and other establishments. However, players are only allowed to legally win merchandise up to the value of $10, not cash. Strict legal restrictions were introduced in 2004 on the use of video poker machines, which include a mandatory fee of $300 on every machine and a fine of $5,000 imposed on those found to be operating machines illegally, as well as tighter penalties on cash payouts.

North Carolina Lottery

The latest development in gambling in North Carolina is the passing of a bill in 2005 to allow the development of a North Carolina lottery. The lottery is intended to help fund education in the state. Harrah's Smoky Mountains Casino, in Casino Drive, Cherokee, is operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee who signed a compact with the state governor in 1994 to allow certain types of video gambling. The gambling must be based only on games of skill, and the machines are required to return a minimum of 83% and a maximum of 98%.

North Carolina Cherokee Casino

Harrah?s Smoky Mountains Casino has a floor area of some 75,000 square feet and is open 24 hours a day. Visitors to the Casino can play on an assortment of some 3,300 gaming machines which include Video Blackjack, Video Craps, Video Keno and Video Poker, and on 24 table games.

Harrah´s claims to be the only casino in the country to offer the innovative new games of Baccarito, with live dealers, real chips and digital cards, and ??Lock-n-Roll", which is like a traditional slot machine but with options for locking one or more reels before re-spinning. This offers an exciting new adaptation of traditional slot machine games such as Wild Cherry, Double Diamonds, Sizzlin? 7?s, and Red, White and Blue. Another major attraction at Harrah?s Casino is Live Digital Blackjack, which combines live dealers with digital action. The Casino offers hotel accommodation of 576 rooms, and boasts six restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisine. There is also a conference center attached. Live entertainment is provided at Harrah´s Cherokee Pavilion, with its 1,500 seats. Many famous celebrities have performed here including Loretta Lynn, Charlie Daniels, Bill Cosby, Kenny Rogers and BB King.

Cherokee is based in Western North Carolina, where there is a great variety of accommodation including cabins and hotel rooms in the beautiful settings of the Appalachian, Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. In Cherokee itself, popular hotels in addition to Harrah?s include the Best Western Great Smokies Inn, the Cherokee Inn and the Days Inn. The Cherokee Indian Visitor?s Center provides a wealth of information on the various activities and attractions that the area has to offer.

Harrah?s can be found at:
777 Casino Drive, Cherokee, North Carolina 28719-8735, (828) 497-7777.
