 Nebraska Gambling: Casinos, Poker, Pari-mutuel

Nebraska Casinos & Gambling

Nebraska Gambling & Casino Forum :: Nebraska Pari-mutuel & Casinos :: Nebraska Casinos

As part of the Great Plains, Nebraska is known for being Native American country. Indian tribes have lived and settled on this state, where most of their livelihood has been made through ranches and farms. But aside from being known for being a good plantation state, little is known about Nebraska?s other major hobby ? gambling.

Most of Nebraska?s Native American tribes are currently running the chief casinos and horse racetracks in the state. The Winnebago, Santee, Ponca, and Sioux tribes have been operating the main casinos and gambling centers, which offer modern and state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.

All forms of gambling sprouted in Nebraska as casinos and horse racetracks operate in different parts of the state. The lottery has generated a total of $93 million spent in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2005, making the grand total of $819 million wagered since the lottery was introduced in the state since 1993.

However, Nebraskans have yet to see gambling legalized in the state. The state?s unicameral legislation rejected plans to legalize the lottery, and the attempt to revive a constitutional amendment regarding gambling had gone awry. Similarly, the door had been shut on two more casinos which planned to open in Nebraska by billionaire Warren Buffet.

There is big potential for Nebraska?s gambling industry as it could threaten its neighboring states of gambling revenues and cut them by half. But as Nebraska?s gambling scene remains in the dark as the tribal casinos? owners have yet to show activeness in pursuing the legalization of gambling. Nevertheless, gambling in Nebraska will always be there and this will continue to place the state in the U.S. map.

Iron Horse Bar and Casino

The Iron Horse Bar and Casino is a Native American casino located in the quaint town of Emerson, Nebraska. Run by the Winnebago tribe, it is a small casino which covers an area of around 2,000 square feet. It is also not the typical casino which carries slot machines, roulette wheels, and blackjack tables. Rather, it only carries 39 seats for electronic bingo machines, which is the only legalized form of gambling in the state. The homey ambience and small town feel gives The Iron Horse its unique style. The casino is open all year round from 9:30am to 11pm daily. It has one restaurant and has been remodeled in fall last year, but there have been plans for a major expansion.

Ohiya Casino

Located in Niobrara, Nebraska, the sprawling Ohiya Casino is operated by the Santee Sioux tribe. It opened in 1996 in a small converted space with a small number of Class III gaming devices. The casino covers a huge area of 12,000 square feet, which makes it capable of accommodating 220 slots. This includes 50 bingo slots, 100 seats for bingo, and its newest addition of 80 video pull tabs. The video pull tabs, which includes the Lucky Tab II machines, is seeking legalization with the Johnson Act as it is considered a Class II gaming device. (Class II is not yet legal under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.) With one restaurant named the Ohiya Casino Café, the Ohiya Casino is open daily from 8am till midnight.

Players place the wagers on which numbers they think will be drawn. There are keno caddies from which bet slips can be obtained and a keno book helps select the game type or wager to be played. The casino is open from Monday to Thursday from 10am to 10pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 10am till midnight, and Sundays from 1-9pm.

Columbus Races

Columbus Races is a horse track which features thoroughbred racing. It is home to the Platte County Agricultural Society and has two restaurants, Hanson?s Food and the Starting Gate Café. Fridays are considered Ladies Night as women are given free admission to the venue.
